Autumn leaf - Parthenocissus quinquefolia

This climber puts out a massive amount of growth each season, and climbs by attaching itself firmly to brickwork. For these reasons - its size and tenacity, I've found it's best to prune it hard back each year, and not to let it get away out of sight into your gutters. It also comes into leaf very late, and makes rather a mess when its leaves drop. For all these potential faults, it is worth a place in the garden (on a large wall) just for the spectacular colours of its leaves in the autumn.
